A serious clash erupts when a group of Māori activists directly confronts all-male, all-white engineering students from the University of Auckland, who are engaged in their farcical “Haka Party,” a grotesque parody of a Māori cultural practice performed during the New Year celebrations. The ensuing conflict, and the subsequent trial, will have a lasting impact on ethnic relations in Aotearoa. By revisiting this pivotal episode in contemporary New Zealand history, the film sheds light on the persistent tensions surrounding racism and memory, and illustrates the possibilities for progress towards harmonious coexistence.
