Wapikoni – Screening and discussion with filmmaker Kim Arseneault

“Madah8do al8miwi nia” means “the monster in me” in Abenaki. Through this animated short film, Kim visually explores her healing journey, confronting a monster that follows her daily: anxiety. She expresses her desire to tame this beast by illustrating the path of a small broken woman on the road to recovery.

Kim Arseneault, originally from W8linak (born in Trois-Rivières), is an Abenaki woman passionate about the culture and history of her nation. After experiencing her first creative studio with Wapikoni in 2022, she decided to pursue film studies at the Kiuna Institution in the winter of 2023. She uses cinema as a tool for healing and a voice to break taboos while showcasing the richness of Abenaki culture. Her greatest source of inspiration is Ariel, her daughter, for whom she wants to build a better future—showing through her films that an Abenaki woman can achieve anything she sets her mind to.
