Racines gravées

Starting August 11, 2026, ESPACIO MÉXICO Montréal presents Engraved Roots, an exhibition bringing together two major figures of Indigenous printmaking from Canada and Mexico: Kenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013), a pioneer of Inuit art from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), and Nicolás de Jesús, a Nahua artist from Ameyaltepec, Guerrero, and co-founder of the Taller Mexicano de Grabado.

This exhibition marks a new collaboration between ESPACIO MÉXICO Montréal and the Montréal First Peoples’ Festival.

Separated by a continent yet united by a shared commitment to preserving the memory, spirituality, and resilience of their peoples through printmaking, their works are presented together for the first time. On one side are Kenojuak’s iconic birds and spirit figures, now emblematic of modern Inuit art. On the other are Nicolás de Jesús’s engravings on amate paper, where social commentary intertwines with pre-Hispanic traditions.

Engraved Roots invites visitors to discover how two Indigenous artistic traditions, though geographically distant, engage in a powerful dialogue through ink and line.
