TERRES EN VUES / LAND InSIGHTS, an association created to promote Indigenous cultures, with headquarters in Montréal (Québec, Canada), organizes every year the First Peoples Festival (Présence autochtone). The film program within the 29th edition of this multidisciplinary festival is scheduled from August 6 to 14, 2019.
The festival shows recent audio-visual works that reflect the culture, history, spirituality and the contemporary reality of Indigenous Peoples across the Americas and from other parts of the world. We primarily seek works made by Indigenous authors, but we also welcome any work on topics relevant to our objectives and exemplifying collaboration between Native people and non-Native makers.
We accept short, medium and feature length films or other works made for the cinema screen, whether fiction, animation, documentary or experimental. It must have been produced within the last three years and must not be screened in Montréal prior to the festival. Only special presentations defined by the programmers or films eligible to the APTN Award (for the accomplishment of an Indigenous filmmaker in the past year) may include works that are not a Montréal premiere. The selection committee makes final decisions. The festival will inform filmmakers (or entry contact person) if the work is selected.
Films in competition are eligible to awards in various categories. An independent jury chooses the winners. The selection committee defines which category each work belongs to. Usually, a film runs in only one category, unless the selection committee decides otherwise exceptionally.
Screenings take place in Montréal and Kahnawake (Mohawk Territory). Entry is free. For films in competition, the festival will not pay rental fees; the festival will however pay the cost of returning the copies.
Awards will be given during a special event in August 2019.
For selection purposes, we need the following documentation:
the online entry form;
online screener with link and password (ex. private Vimeo) provided on the form, the access must remain valid until the end of the festival; Or: two (2) DVD copies (NTSC or PAL), clearly identified with the title, duration, name of director, and return address.
At least one high resolution picture of the film, uploaded on the form. Note that the image must not bear any writing or graphic design on it, so not the poster for instance. You can later provide by email more images and other promotional documents.
