Jacques Newashish

Thursday August 3 – 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Friday August 4 – 2:00pm to 4:00 pm
Sunday August 6 – 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Jaquest Newashish is a painter and printmaker who also manages a traditional life site at Coucoucache, in Haute-Mauricie. He is a very skilled wood engraver, but painting remains his preferred means of expression. His latest shows took place at Université de Trois-Rivières and at the Abenaki Museum in Odanak. He is an esteemed illustrator of tales and legends, and takes part in many solo and group shows in Québec and Europe.

His work is permeated by an intelligence attentive to living beings and the land. A profound commitment to his people led him to conceive of deeply-rooted art and opened up his work process to participatory work processes, involving the hopes and energy of Wemotaci youth. An installation and performance marked by spirituality allowed Montrealers to access the cultural universe of some ten young Atikamekw youth during the inauguration of the 2002 season of the First Nations Garden. Through his deep understanding of his nation's tradition and by his artistic approach guided by major contemporary currents, Jacques Newashish occupies a key place in his community. Both through his art and his involvement with youth, this sensitive and committed creative artist allows us to share the real and symbolic territory of a man who, beyond sorrows and fears, remains free to attune his breathing to that of the land.
