2021 edition

RULES

TERRES EN VUES / LAND InSIGHTS, an association created to promote Indigenous cultures, with headquarters in Montréal (Québec, Canada), organizes the annual multidisciplinary event, the International First Peoples Festival (Présence autochtone) since 1991. The film program within the 31st edition of this festival is scheduled from August 3rd to 11th, 2021.

The festival shows recent audio-visual works that reflect the culture, history, spirituality and the contemporary reality of Indigenous Peoples across the Americas and from other parts of the world. We primarily seek works made by Indigenous authors, but we also welcome any work on topics relevant to our objectives and exemplifying collaboration between Native people and non-Native filmmakers.

Considered for selection will be short, medium and feature length films that have been produced within the last three years preceding the festival. Priority will be given to works which have not been previously shown on screens in Montreal.

A competitive section, for the APTN Award (granted to an Aboriginal filmmaker who has distinguished himself or herself in the past year), welcomes films that may have been shown in Montreal. Other non-competitive, thematic or retrospective sections may also occasionally include films that would not be Montreal premieres.

The festival seeks works in all genres: fiction, animation, documentary and experimental cinema. The selection committee is responsible for the final selection of works. Submitters will be informed by June at the latest if the work is selected.

Films entered in the annual competition are eligible to awards in various categories. An independent jury chooses the winners. The selection committee defines which category each work belongs to. Usually, a film runs in only one category, unless the selection committee decides otherwise exceptionally.

Screenings take place in Montréal and Kahnawake (Mohawk Territory). An Internet broadcast may be offered to rights holders for certain films and will then be the subject of a specific agreement.

Entry is free. The festival will pay a compensatory amount for screenings; the fee schedule will be communicated when a work is selected. The festival assumes the cost of returning the screening copies.

The announcement of the winners and the awards presentation will take place during a special event as part of the festival's activities.

For selection purposes, we need the following documentation:

  • The completed form submitted electronically;

  • The artwork to be viewed delivered as follows: online viewing link and password (if applicable), to be provided in the form. Access to the film must be valid at all times until the end of the festival.

  • At least one photo of the film in high resolution, submitted using the online form. Please note that this image must be free of any handwriting or graphics, not a poster file for example. You may submit additional image selections or other promotional materials by email at a later date.
