Teueikan Award 2nd Prize to Retablo by Álvaro Delgado-Aparicio L. More like popular art than sacred art, Retablo, with rare sensitivity, takes the viewer to the heart of the transmission of knowledge, from father to son, in a traditional Quechua community. But while indigenous culture has integrated Christianity, it has also been transformed by it. The touching images of popular piety can hide shameful secrets in a world now regulated by an uncompromising moral code inherited from Catholicism. For the authenticity of the Quechua actors' acting, which perfectly captures life in an Andean village on screen, and for the courage its director showed in tackling the taboo subject of homosexuality in a country with a deep legacy of homophobia, the jury awarded Retablo the 2nd Teueikan Prize.
