Synopsis

Ophir tells the story of an extraordinary revolution for life, land and culture, leading up to the potential birth of the world’s newest nation on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. An unknown indigenous revolution, a decade long war, and the indelible thirst of a people for freedom.
Rigoberta Menchú Grand Prize , to Ophir by Alexandre Berman and Olivier Pollet At the end of a long colonial period, with the ransacking and plundering of the territory by a mining company, after a decade of civil war, the people of Bougainville Island were finally able to choose independence through a referendum which the Yes side won by 98%. A film gives voices and faces to the heroic resistance of a South Pacific Indigenous nation that has never given up its rights.
