Laura Niquay is an Atikamekw artist from the Indigenous community of Wemotaci. Her debut album, Waratanak, was released independently in 2015. She has been evolving in music for several years but has been getting a lot of attention lately, showcasing around. She received 8 prizes at the Festival Vue sur la Relève in 2018, the Special Jury Prize at the Gala Teweikan in October 2017, for all of her work and her involvement. She is the first Atikamekw artist to perform at the Francofolies de Montréal in 2011, the same year she won the Emerging Talent Award at the Teweikan Gala. She is a role model for youth and women in her community. With her guitar, in a folk-soft atmosphere, she sings with her sanded voice, in Atikamekw and in French, in order to acknowledge her cultural heritages. Respect for nature, empowerment of women, hope for a better future for the next generations, are inspirations to her music. A nomadic soul, well grounded in her time.
