Esther Pennell

Esther Pennell is a singer, songwriter, and musician living in North Bay, Ontario. Her indigenous roots originate in the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation in Newfoundland. Her songs reflect her personal life story and a deep connection with Mother Earth. Esther’s voice has a haunting quality with lyrics that are poignant and honest.

A self-taught banjo player, Esther’s unique style on the 5-string banjo makes her an innovator and a fresh presence in the world of folk blues music. She can take you on journey through “banjo stories” that are emotionally authentic, spiritual, and often humorous. Her presence on stage is captivating. Although Esther began playing live in public venues only recently, she has the poise and eloquence of a seasoned performer. 

Esther’s life experiences are the catalyst for her songs about feminine resilience, heartache and joy, and staying grounded through a spiritual connection with the natural world. She sticks to her bluesy folk roots and draws inspiration from her east coast Mi’kmaq heritage. She has natural talents for music, humour, and performance and uses these to sing her way into the hearts of her audience.
