Crisanta Pérez is put on trial for her democratic defence of the environment and the land. Crisanta belongs to the Résistencia group, a group of citizens opposing the Marlin mine, which belongs to the second largest gold-producing multinational in the world: Goldcorp Inc. The Résistencia group speaks out against the violation of communities’ rights, pollution and drying up rivers and streams as well as the appearance of intercommunity disputes sparked by the mining project. They call for a halt to the mine’s activities want the company to leave. The Guatemalan government is deaf to their protests. Closely linked to the transnationals, it is encouraging these mining companies to set up there. In Guatemala, these corporations pocket 99% of the metal mined, while nobody listens to the people’s demands and their struggle is repressed and criminalized. A clear observation: the profit its of a few in countries in the North are worth more than indigenous people’s most basic rights. Crisanta Pérez and the Résistencia group know this all close up…
