Louis de Buade de Frontenac et de Palluau (1622-1698)

Louis de Buade de Frontenac et de Palluau was of the old nobility and spent his first years as an adult among the King's entourage at Court and on European battlefields. Appointed Governor General of New France in 1672, he was recalled in 1682 and then reinstated in 1689. He defended the colony against the English and waged war on the Iroquois. Respected by all Amerindian nations, even his enemies, he initiated negotiations in 1690 with the view of concluding a peace agreement between the French and the Amerindians. These negotiations were brought to a successful conclusion by de Callière in 1701. Frontenac passed away in Québec City in 1698.
